What to check when an AI character changes

A practical checklist for identifying face, clothing and style drift, then changing one part of a scene at a time.

Name the difference before trying another generation

“The character is wrong” is hard to act on. Identify whether the face, body proportions, clothing, color, material or visual style changed. Compare the new still with the reference at the same viewing size.

Check whether the character is actually selected for the scene. A similar written description is not the same as using the saved reference. Also look for conflicts between the reference, scene description and chosen style.

Change one input at a time

  1. Confirm the selected cast and reference image.
  2. Remove appearance instructions that contradict the reference.
  3. Use a simpler pose or clearer framing if the identity is obscured.
  4. Reduce the number of interacting characters while diagnosing the issue.
  5. Review the new still before spending credits on motion.
Keep: orange fur, dark green coat, brass buttons.
Change: camera framing only, medium shot instead of wide shot.
Action: Pip opens the notebook.
Do not change: outfit, time of day or visual style during this test.

Check the whole sequence

A scene may look convincing alone and still feel different next to the others. Put the reference and scene frames side by side. Look at silhouette first, then face and clothing. Check the first and last frame of a motion clip too.

If a result remains inconsistent, document the model, settings and specific failure. A different model or simpler scene may help, but there is no guaranteed prompt that fixes every case. Stop and revise the brief rather than repeating the same request indefinitely.

Keep useful failures in your notes

Record which camera angles or group scenes caused trouble. That gives the next episode a practical starting point. Do not treat a single good image as proof of perfect cross-episode consistency.

This is a troubleshooting method, not a measured benchmark of MakeStory generation. Review the current quote before rerendering, since retries can consume credits.

The next scene starts with an idea.
